Marika Dubiel wins Dutch Women’s Championships for 9th time!

Marika Dubiel 2d won her 9th Dutch Women’s Championships title. After moving to Austria and being absent from the Dutch Women’s Championships for 2 years, she was able to play the online version of the Dutch Women’s Championships. She admitted to barely playing for the last two years but again fell in love with the game, and that the tournament reminded her of the great Go memories.

  • Rob van Zeijst wins Dutch Championships

Rob van Zeijst wins Dutch Championships

Rob van Zeijst 7d won the Dutch Championships for the fourth time last Sunday. Rob van Zeijst is one of the strongest players from the Netherlands, who won the European Championships 3 times (1981, 1990, and 1993). Rob moved back from Japan at the end of 2016, where he wrote Go columns and Go books, worked as a technical translator, court interpreter, and a wedding celebrant, and has since his return been the dominating force of the Dutch Go scene.

During the tournament, Rob only lost from Gilles van Eeden 6d (Dutch Champion of 1995), when battling for the first spot in the finals. After losing this game he moved to the losers bracket, where he beat Gelmer Bouwman, who is a strong 4d. The next fight was for the spot in the final, where he met Alexander Eerbeek 5d (Dutch Champion of 2012), who won his previous match against Gerard Nederveen 3d. Alexander is currently living in Spain and was able to play in the tournament due to it being online. Unfortunately for Alexander, Rob won.

Gilles who won the main bracket was able to rest during the first day of the second weekend and only needed to win one game to be crowned Dutch Champion. Rob still needed to win two games to win the Championships. in the first game of the finals, Gilles fell behind in the opening and never fully managed to catch up afterward.

The second game was more or less even at move 181, after which Gilles made a 3 point mistake with move 182, and the game became (again) slightly favorable for Rob, who then took home the bacon.
